Groceries for Families: Week 31 - Day 2

Oh that this mild weather would hold. We all know rain is coming, but it sure is nice to have dry and mild temperatures for a bit longer. Wednesday rolled right along, with all cylinders clicking. It is obvious to the crew how the operation has found a groove. Things get easier and go smoother. The morning was hopping with lots of deliveries of groceries and pantry items. Wow, thank you! Families on Wednesday arrive early and today was no exception. Lots of socializing going on the lawn and at the picnic tables. Great day!

Groceries today were provided by the Rotary Club of Bellevue, Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club, and the Jubilee Friends group, as well as Bellevue Christian Reformed, 24-Seven, Bellevue Presbyterian, Crossroads Bible, St. Louise, Newport Covenant, and Calvary Chapel Eastside churches. A total of 197 orders came in and all but 28 went out today. We made quite a few extra from returned items yesterday, which accounts for many of the remaining orders. Thank you to all who participated today. Wonderful!

The AM volunteer crew today was from Bellevue Presbyterian Church. The crew of 8 received all the groceries, packed the food boxes, and set the market. It was great fun! Thank you, team. If you’d like to sign your church or organization up to work a shift together, you can do so here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b094daeaf2fa6fc1-volunteer1. You will be responsible for recruiting the crew of eight.

Food Box Delivery

Food Box Delivery

Sysco was here at 8:00am this morning with the perishable food box items.

They unloaded at 9:30am, right on time. It’s a great system. There is one pallet of milk gallons. There are two pallets of produce boxes (potatoes, carrots, apples, and onions). There is one pallet of dairy boxes (liquid eggs, butter, and cheese). There is one pallet of frozen protein boxes (chicken patties and shredded chicken). We add to the fresh produce purchased each morning at Smart Foodservice in Bellevue (tomatoes, lettuce, bananas, green pepper, cucumber). It is a well-balanced and good quantity of food given to each family.

One of our Site Coaches, Sterling, had a brilliant idea last week to use QFC shopping carts for families to take groceries to their cars. There were a few carts at the nearby bus station, so we gave it a try. It was a total game-changer, which everyone loved. Early yesterday, we went to the next-door QFC to ask the manager if he would allow us to use carts. He is fully aware of the ‘Groceries for Families’ program, so said we could use as many as needed. Today we used 7! Now, instead of carrying groceries, some of us have been coming cart-chasers. It’s wonderful!

A few quick stories:

  • One of the grandma’s in the program brought the crew homemade soup yesterday  We had it for lunch today.  Tasty!  Once again, everything she put in the soup came from the Jubilee groceries.  That is so cool.  She continues to love the people here through her cooking.  She has such a sweet and tender heart.

  • We had a small issue in line this afternoon just before we opened.  Cones are spaced out every 7’ or so for families to stand at to stay safely apart.  They move from station to station.  People regularly claim their spot with a bag well in advance of 1:00pm.  Today, the first 7 cones closest to the front had about 15 people standing at them.  It was an immediate red flag and totally against the safety precautions.  As we questioned the group, it was clear a number of the initial people had allowed friends to join them at the front, despite only saving one cone.  We quickly added 7 cones into the parking lot and had everyone space out, making it clear that this cannot happen.  It was a very direct conversation, aimed at a few specific people.  Afterward, we asked a few of the English speakers how it was received.  All said it was totally appropriate and appreciated.  It feels like some rule changes about reserving spots in advance are coming next week.

  • One lady came today in shorts and a t-shirt like it was still August.  The woman next to her was in a full-length winter coat.  What a contrast!  We teased the summer-dresser a bit, which made her laugh.  She is originally from Honduras and said she just never gets cold.  It was a nice moment in line with a little laughter.

Thanks for another great day.  Your generosity in supplying so much to make this program possible is a wonderful gift.  Thank you for responding so quickly to the calls for high-need items.  Last week, baby wipes nearly ran out.  You responded with quick action to ensure no family went without.  It shows how much you care and how connected your heart is.  Thank you so much!

Looking forward to another good day tomorrow,

Groceries for Families: Week 31 - Day 1

The new week begins with a very busy, busy Tuesday with lots going on around here. All of it is made much easier by the cooperating dry weather. Lots of shoppers were streaming in all morning with groceries and pantry items. Thank you! Families on Tuesdays claim their spot in line with a bag, but then show up just before 1pm. We had a steady line all afternoon until 3:25pm. People seemed to be in a good mood and enjoyed being here. It’s so great to see so many recognizable faces and plenty of new ones. Another wonderful day!

The Sysco truck arrived at 6:45am this morning, waaaaaaay early.  The driver was kind enough to wait until 9:00am to start unloading.  We are very careful with the time perishables are kept out of refrigeration.  From here, he went to Lake Stevens, Stanwood, and then to our partner in West Seattle, El Dios Viviente Methodist Church.  Pastor Gerado is supporting 300 families in that community.

Zucchini & Squash

Mosby Farms in Auburn called late yesterday with a donation of fresh zucchini and yellow squash.

We took a truck there at 9:30am this morning and brought back 6 pallets of boxes.

While there was plenty that needed to be tossed (which is why there were donated), most were lovely vegetables.

The zucchini is especially popular with families.  Thank you Mosby Farms and Cascadia Produce.

New Canopies

New Canopies

Lots of shoppers brought Halloween candy with their orders today.  We have invited families to a ‘Trunk & Treat’ celebration this Friday evening from 4-6pm.  Thank you for the candy!

Three new carports were donated last week, replacing the canopies which were destroyed in the recent wind storm.

Volunteers late yesterday constructed them and secured them into the ground.  This gives us an additional covered area of 10’ x 60’ to keep families dry.  So great!  It also allows us to have two lines undercover.  Thank you!

Exit Lane Market

The market was full today with all sorts of great items.

Volunteers had brought donations from the Safeway Thrashers Corner in Bothell, as well as the QFC Crossroads.

It’s so nice to put out a variety of foods for families.  Thank you!

A few emails from families today:

  • Hello.  I am writing this letter to tell you "Thank you for your generous donation". I live with my husband and 4 little kids. I am not working because of taking care of my children at home. Only my husband works to support my family. During the COVID crisis, your generous donation is very helpful to my family because my husband's work hours decreased due to COVID. Thank you again. I hope your generous donation makes many people smile and happy.

  • Quiero agradecer el apoyo que emos recibido mi familia y yo gracias por ese gran corazón que Dios los Bendiga y los llene de cosas lindas a ustedes y sus familias gracias por hacer de estos tiempos difíciles llenos de esperanza .

I want to thank the support that my family and I have received. Thank you for that great heart. May God Bless you and fill you and your families with beautiful things. Thank you for making these difficult times full of hope.

We begin this week with 626 families in this ‘Groceries for Families’ program, which represent about 2,817 people.  Last week, 15 families were added to the program.  We also removed 23 families which weren’t coming and no longer were communicating.  There are 55 families we are “watching” because of irregular attendance.  We work to communicate with these families to find out what is keeping them from coming for food.  If we can help, we will.  If they don’t communicate, the next step is to remove them.  Our goal is to get the “watch list” to a very small number.

The top pantry items currently are baby wipes, paper towels, laundry pods and #2 diapers.  Thank you!

There is no further update on perishable food since yesterday.  Stay tuned.

Thank you for your continued support of these families.  There are so many good things happening here.  Beyond food, our hope is families feel loved and seen.  You are helping make that possible.  Please pray for these families.  Life is hard for them.

Groceries for Families: Week 30 - Day 3

The final day for families this week ended on a high note, with all things clicking very well. Even the weather cooperated today, although hands were cold as the temperature steadily drops. At least it was dry. Many shoppers came early today, with the tables full by 9:00am. Wow! Lots of groceries and pantry items came in today. The Thursday families are always slow to arrive, so only about 30 were in line at opening time. But they steadily came all afternoon and seemed to be in good spirits.

Exit Lane Market

Exit Lane Market

The market was nice and full today with a good variety.  Milk, grapefruit, and corn remained from yesterday.  Cascadia Produce called again to offer fresh cucumbers and romaine lettuce, so we sent a vehicle to Auburn this morning at 9am.  Thank you, Sam!  Volunteers dropped off food from the QFC Crossroads.  Thank you for all these extras.

Here's a quick shout out to all of you who specifically support the pet portion of this program.  The donations of dog food, cat food, and cat litter are certainly given with love.  We’ve followed Seattle Humane in their efforts to keep pets in their homes, as people struggle to afford supplies.  Pets offer companionship, love, and comfort to many people.  Your support allows people to literally keep their pets and not have to choose food over their pets.  Thank you!

As introduced in yesterday’s email, Friday, October 30 will be “Trunk or Treat”, inviting all the families to come to celebrate Halloween safely.  We’re asking shoppers to include bags of candy with their groceries next week, which will go out to all the kids.  Thank you in advance

A story to share:

  • Speaking to a family in line yesterday, they shared how life is right now with two parents and three school-age children.  The mom has kept her employment at a senior living home, which pays little but is at least some income. The dad used to drive the green & white vehicles for Microsoft but has been without work since March.  He is now the full-time parent helping the kids get through the online school.  He said it is a blessing for him to be there to support the kids, as school isn’t easy for them.  He longs to get back to work but has no idea when Microsoft will start using shuttles again.  They are a very sweet family, which the entire crew enjoys seeing each week.  This is a classic example of a family situation.

An email from a family today:

  • Hi, my family and I would like to thank Jubilee REACH for the help we got for providing my family and me with food. We are a family of 5 my husband, me, and our 3 kids. My husband was supposed to be back to work because of a work-related injury and he was supposed to be back to work in March but unfortunately, his company shut down due to covid-19, and a few months later his company decided to close it indefinitely. I was working but I lost my job. I have a daughter with a medical problem that I’m afraid to go to work because I don't want her to get sick. We were living off our funds but unfortunately, they ran out. We are struggling like every else. It’s really been stressful for us trying to find a way on how to pay rent or how to pay our bills. We are really thankful that Jubilee REACH can help us with food so our children won't go hungry. Thank you from my family

The USDA program which has been supplying the perishables foods since the end of September will be ending on October 31.  There has been no extension, which had been widely expected, as it impacts organizations nationwide.  It’s hard to know what is causing this decision.  What this likely means is our current perishable food supply will end after next week.  We have been watching this carefully and now are nearly certain this will happen.  Currently, there is not another source which has surfaced.  Please pray over this, as we are.  A new source will need to be found to begin November 3.  If you have any ideas or hear any response to your prayer, please reply or call.  We are in full discernment right now.  Please join us.

Looking ahead to next week, baby wipes remain the top pantry need-item.  Close behind are paper towels and diapers (sizes 3,5,6).

We are so grateful to be in a relationship and partnership with you all in this ‘Groceries for Families’ program.  Sustaining such a program is difficult and takes a concerted effort.  This is true here inside Jubilee and is certainly true for all of you.  Harder still, this is also true for the families.  They are fighting to sustain their lives each day.  Many rely on this program as the main source of support.  Thank you for all you are doing to support them through your time, treasure, and efforts.  Bless you all.

Enjoy the evening, wherever this note finds you,

Groceries for Families: Week 30 - Day 2

The early morning seemed to lull us into believing the weather today would be mild, at worst. Then the storm which blew through Bellevue in the mid-morning hit us hard. Within a quick time, the sky got dark, hail came down, thunder and lightning, and lots of rain. The shoppers had to deal with it all morning. Fortunately, the storm moved on by the late morning and gave way to a calm afternoon. Lots of families came today and, other than wet grass, had an easy day. The operation was smooth and very enjoyable.

A family (one of you!) donated produce through Oxbow Farm, which came today to deliver in the rain.

We received beautiful butternut squash and washed beets.  We decided to hold these back for the second half of the day, so the later families could enjoy them.

When they came out to the market, people were very happy.  Thank you, sweet family, for this gift!

QFC Crossroads Delivery

Gill and Libby, pictured to the right, are volunteers who deliver donated food from the QFC Crossroads each day.

They are special people who have a heart for helping people get food.  Today, their vehicle was stuffed as full as we’ve ever seen it.

About 20 crates of half-gallon milk was a rare treat in the order, which was a welcome sight to families who crave milk.

Along with the produce, bakery, and meats, this all added a lot to the market today.  Thank you both for your faithful service!

Corn!

Corn!

Cascadia Produce in Auburn has become a nice partner recently and late yesterday offered to donate pallets of fresh corn.  How could that be passed up!?

The Jubilee REACH truck was at their warehouse this morning, where Cascadia also offered a pallet of fresh, lovely grapefruit.  How fun to have these two fun items in the market today!  After the operation today, we texted all of yesterday’s families to come and get milk, corn, and grapefruit from 3:30-4:30pm.  About 40 families came.  The remaining items will go out to families tomorrow.  Thank you, Jeremy and Jill, at Cascadia!

Volunteers ran the morning shift from 9am-12pm again today.  It was great!  They greeted all the shoppers and kept the groceries organized, which is not an easy task.  They packed all the food boxes.  They also portioned out many dozen of donated doughnuts, delivered by volunteers this morning, into ziplock bags for the market.  Thank you crew!

The afternoon crew of Jubilee Site Coaches are such a blessing to serve with.  They not only know this operation well, but are so loving and caring to the families.  To know their day-jobs are loving and caring for Bellevue public school children shows the true gifts and talents they have.  Thank you all!

A quick story:

  • You’ve read most weeks how one of the families brings lunch to the crew on Tuesdays. The lady came yesterday with a pot of homemade sausage meatball vegetable soup.  She shared that everything in the soup had come to her through Jubilee.  How fun is that!  We had it for lunch today and, let us attest, that lady can cook!  She regularly shows love through her cooking.  Lucky us!

An email from a family today:

  • “I want to say thank you for all the donors and sponsors of the food program. I don’t work since March because my workplace closed.  My mom got some underlying conditions and my husband is 70.   I have to care of everybody in my family.  Second this program helps me a lot. My siblings are counting on me too. I would like to thank all the volunteers too for giving all their time and effort for this program. So grateful for all the people with their continued support . Again I'm grateful for all the help. “

Some of you have been asking what we’re doing for the families at Halloween.  On Friday, October 30 we are inviting all the families to bring their children to Jubilee REACH from 4-6pm for ‘Trunk & Treat’.  The Jubilee staff will be decorating the back end of their cars in the parking lot and handing out candy in costume.  Families will be let in on a staggered basis to keep distancing appropriate.  It will be a lot of fun!  We’re asking shoppers if they would kindly send bags of store-bought candy with their groceries next week.  We will use it all on Friday.  Thank you.

Thanks for another great day.  Sorry that this entry was so long.  There was a lot going on here today! 😊

Groceries for Families: Week 30 - Day 1

The first day of the week was a great one! The weather was ideal for a fall day, with the sun streaming through at times. Jackets have replaced short-sleeves with the cooler temperatures, but the dry weather today was very welcome. The morning was very joyful with lots of happy shoppers dropping off groceries and pantry items. Families came all afternoon, with a steady line holding until about 3:15pm. The entire operation was smooth, making for a very enjoyable day. Love it!

The morning shift of the operation changed today from being done by Jubilee staff to being run by volunteers.

A crew of 8 volunteers worked from 9am-12pm, receiving groceries, packing food boxes, and doing various other tasks.

It was a huge success all-around, with positive comments coming from the debrief at noon.

The change brings volunteers closer to the operation and allows the Jubilee staff, who normally work in the Bellevue public schools, to spend more time in their main role.  Thank you volunteers!

Seattle Bagel Bakery donated boxes of fresh bagels this morning.  It started as a chance meeting in a park between one of the Grocery shoppers and Bijan, the Director of Operation.  As they talked, she shared what was happening at Jubilee.  He got excited about the program and wanted to help.  He was here this morning and likely will be back with more one day soon.  Thank you, SBB!  Look for their brand in your favorite store.  What fun!

A few stories from today:

  • One of the grocery orders was delivered this morning by Amazon Prime.  As the man set the bags down, he noticed what was happening and inquired about how a family can get help here.  We asked a few questions to learn about him.  He lives in Federal Way and drives for Amazon.  He is married with 5 kids under 15 years old.  They moved to the US a year ago from Afghanistan, where he worked with the US military at Bagram Air Base.  There he learned English and was able to secure a visa to immigrate.  They chose Seattle because a friend lives here.  He is a very nice man and needs help.  He returned around noon after his shift and may come back tomorrow to register for the program.   Such a cool connection and story.  We’ll see what happens.

  • There are two ladies that were in the program all spring and summer, leaving the program in late July.  Both returned in late September, needing additional support.  They are delightful women and full of laughter.  One of the ladies shared they are struggling because her husband simply can’t earn enough income from his restaurant job, despite working full-time.  Prior to the crisis, he was a server making an hourly wage and tips…enough to support the family.  With the restaurant now doing take-out only, he is only assisting in the kitchen.  His income is only half what it used to be without tips.  They both cook for friends on the side to make a little extra money.  Until he can get back to making tips, they will be struggling.  This is a very common story with families.

  • A new family was at the back of the line this afternoon.  They had been receiving groceries in the spring and summer by delivery through the program.  When deliveries stopped, they didn’t come register until today.  We were able to welcome them back and learn a bit of their story.  They were delighted to be here and had fun going through the market.  This is one reason we stopped deliveries; so people could come to be a part of this community.  We’ll watch out for them again next week.

Today marks the start of week 30 of the ‘Groceries for Families’ program.  What started as an 8 week crisis stop-gap in March has become an essential sanctuary for many families in this community.  We begin the week with 634 families in the program, including 32 new from last week.

Groceries for Families: Week 29 - Day 3

Typically Thursdays are the calm day of the week, with slightly fewer families coming. Today, however, was busy from the first moment at 1:00pm until 3:30pm. At 3:00pm, the normal closing time, there was still a line out to the grass (about 20 people deep). Part of the issue was about 20 new families showing up to register. This slows the entire line down. It is fine if there are 5, but twenty causes many minutes to be added to the operation. The morning was a cold temperature but a wonderful flow of shoppers dropping off groceries. Thank you! Families enjoyed some afternoon sun and dry weather. The end of the line never did reach the front until the end of the day. Despite this, the day went very smoothly. The crew was tired but was offered relief by a team of volunteers.

A special delivery came from a member at Newport Covenant Church today – six strands of LED lights.  We will be stringing these under the new carports to give more light to the operation.  With the darker, cloudy days now, it is quite dark under the carports.  This will be a huge help getting into the winter months.  Thank you!

  • There are a few families which have made arrangements to pick up food after hours (between 4-6pm).  Mainly this is due to work or childcare.  Most send an email in the morning to confirm they are coming, so we remember to hold food for them.  On Thursdays, a man comes at 5:30pm.  He lives nearby and works in downtown Bellevue as a cook.  He has been coming since the spring and is a delightful man, whom we all enjoy.  His work hours picked up in July but are not yet full-time.  We sat and chatted a few minutes – just two dads.  He said life remains very hard for them, and he can’t wait for easy routines to return.  He and his wife have three children – a 21-year-old daughter who lives on her own and two young boys.  He said the online school is difficult and adds extra stress to the family.  Financially, they are not only supporting themselves but regularly send money to Honduras to help his mom and his wife’s mom.  This is where any extra money goes.  He said without such support, they would suffer, as there are little hope and few jobs there now.  This causes a strain for him here, but he knows it is nothing compared to what those in Honduras deal with.  So, they continue to help.  Erwin is a good man.  He is carrying a lot to support families in two countries.  Please pray for him and those with him.  Life is hard.

  • Walking the line at the opening time this morning, brought a connection to a new family.  A mom in line said she was here for the first time and didn’t know what to do.  She lives in East Bellevue and has 3 kids in the school district.  They are struggling to get by and someone sent her to Jubilee for help.  She was very relieved and happy to hear about the services she could receive here.  She registered and reached the front, where she was welcomed by the crew who knew she was here for the first time.  She got help carrying everything to the car and made her way through the market, getting to choose items for her family.  For sure, she went away feeling good.  We will look forward to seeing her again next week.  Hopefully, she feels there are people here who care and will help her.  Hopefully, she will find the community here and hope.

This week finishes on a very good note.  The operation is humming along and families are getting help.  Thank you for all you’re doing to support this ‘Groceries for Families’ program.  It matters, and it is working!
