Groceries for Families: Week 39 - Day 2
What a difference a day makes!? After brutal weather yesterday, today was cold but very dry with blue skies. It made the whole operation easier and much more tolerable for those out in the weather much of the day. The line of families extended way out on the grass all afternoon. At least 20 families who should have come yesterday, came today. About the same amount from tomorrow came today, too. It was busy all afternoon, which was awesome. The morning was buzzing with lots of people dropping off groceries and pantry items. Loved today! Thank you.

Groceries today came from Bellevue Christian Reformed, Cornerstone, East Shore Unitarian, Evangelical Chinese, Bellevue Presbyterian, Crossroads Bible, Westminster Chapel, Covenant Presbyterian, Creekside Covenant, and Awakening churches, as well as the Jubilee Friends group. A total of 235 orders came in today and all went out to families today, plus quite a few carried over from yesterday. Wow, so busy! Thank you to everyone who donated today.
Food boxes arrived on time around 9:30am. Love that! Volunteers brought food from QFC Crossroads. Volunteers brought food from Safeway Overlake, via Renewal Food bank. There were some great additions to the market today, including some lovely roses. Thank you everyone!
The AM volunteers today came from Indian Fellowship. This crew consisted of 9 teenagers, plus two dads who hung around to help. They worked hard and got everything done. Thank you, crew!
The Bellevue Kiwanis Club and Interlake High School Key Club made 600 cooking treat bags for this week, 200 for each day. We’ve put one in each grocery bag, so families found a sweet treat with a nice note waiting for them when unpacking. Thank you for this wonderful holiday gift!
The heavy snow last night had to be knocked off with a broom about 8:00pm. Sliding off the canopy roofs, it did some minor damage to the gutter system installed on the main canopies. Jeff, one of the original creators of it, returned this morning and this afternoon to assess, make repairs, and improvements in the weak spots. Happily, the gutters are now back to function again. Thank you, Jeff!
Lunch was delivered today to about 25 senior citizens in the community. This weekly outreach has been going since the spring and is intended to not only provide a tasty meal, but also help people not feel so isolated. Barb, the Jubilee Hospitality Manager, has done a tremendous job creating the meals each week, with the help of many volunteers. The lunch today was actually provided by the Bellevue Fire Department, which delivered them to Jubilee in a big fire truck. Thank you, Bellevue Fire!
One of the donors on this email chain has a heart for the families who don’t eat meat, preferring fish. She often brings fish for these families. Yesterday and today, she brought enough that we put it all on ice right at the main table in the operation, so the crew could have easy access to it. Families were thrilled to have this offered to them, when chicken is not part of their diet. Thank you, Pam!
A few stories:
A very tasty taco lunch for the staff was provided by Lilly today. She comes each Wednesday for groceries, but brought a homemade lunch today to say thank you for the holidays. She is a good cook and expresses her gratitude through her cooking.
Sylvia, another grocery family, brought a lovely plate of homemade cookies for the crew today. Wow! The shortbread chocolate drops are especially good.
Mariana and Hilda are two wonderful friends who have been in the program since the spring. They bring joy and life every Tuesday. Today, they laughed their way through the grocery line. An hour later, they returned in silly holiday suits bringing treats for each of the staff members, delivering it with holiday joy and lots of love. We took a large group photo with Mariana’s phone. We love these two!
Randy, Executive Director of Jubilee REACH, joined the crew this afternoon and kept the market full. He worked hard! Thanks.
Thanks for another great day in Groceries for Families. Thank you for sustaining this through the busy holiday season, too. Wow! This community is pulling so hard and so well together to support these dear families in our back yard. Thank you, so much.
Merry Christmas!

Groceries for Families: Week 39 - Day 1
The first day of week 17 of Version 2 of ‘Groceries for Families’ started off wet, got wetter, then got really wet, and then snowed. The morning was tolerable, with mild temperatures and light steady rain. Lots of happy people came in to drop off groceries and pantry items. By noon, the rain came down harder. By 1:30pm, the rain was really coming down hard. At 2:30pm, the temperature seemed to drop 10-15 degrees in minutes. It stayed cold and is now snowing. Families were definitely held away by the heavy weather. The line was slow but steady all afternoon. It is likely we’ll see plenty of families who were expected today but will come tomorrow or Wednesday.

Groceries today were delivered by Highland Covenant, Sacred Heart Parish and School, Lighthouse, Crossroads Bible, First United Methodist, Doxa, Overlake Park Presbyterian, Bellevue Presbyterian and Lighthouse churches, as well as Champions Foundation, Rotary Bellevue Sunrise, and the Jubilee Friends group. A total of 214 orders were delivered and all but 24 went out to families today. The rest will carry over to tomorrow. Thank you to everyone who donated today.
We are open today, Monday, because of the holiday on Thursday. Thank you to all the Thursday grocery providers who switched to Monday. Food boxes could not be delivered today, so we took a box truck to downtown Kent early this morning to pick up 200 boxes. Next week will also be a Monday delivery day for Thursday providers, as we are closed for New Year’s Eve.
Volunteers delivered food from Safeway Thrasher’s Corner yesterday. Volunteers delivered food from the QFC Crossroads today. Produce was delivered by Cascadia Produce today, as part of the King County grant we have to purchase fresh produce from King County farms. Lots of good food was here for families. Thank you everyone!
The market for senior citizens was held again today, this time from 4-5pm because families were here today. About 30 seniors braved the cold, rain, and dark. We will deliver more tomorrow with lunches.
A family in the South Cove neighborhood organized a neighborhood drive for the GFF program and delivered a carload today. It was a wonderful way for them to get other people involved in the program. Thank you!
A few stories:
About 420 of the 500 ‘Jubilee Elves’ gifts were handed out on Friday and Saturday. More came today. The remaining families have been invited Tuesday and Wednesday morning to pick up their gifts. Thank you, again, for all of you who participated and donated.
A woman and her daughter came this afternoon to receive food help. They arrived about 2:30pm and were added to the waiting list about 3:00pm. They don’t speak any English. By 3:15pm, they had a grocery cart with a food box, bag of groceries and milk. As the PM volunteer crew worked, we noticed this family was still waiting at the picnic tables, as if awaiting a ride. It was cold and getting colder. By 4:15pm, they were still there. The mother was visibly shivering. We invited them inside to get warm, but they were reluctant to leave the front of the building. At 4:30pm, another family came late to get their groceries and seemed to know the mother. They offered the woman and daughter a ride home, having to completely reorganize their own car to make room. It was heartbreaking to see this woman and daughter stuck in the cold and not be able to help them more. We were relieved to see them finally climb into a warm car to go home. We’ll watch for their return next week. Please pray for them.
We begin this week with about 735 families in the ‘Groceries for Families’ program. This includes about 40 families who entered off the waiting list in the past week.
There is not a new update yet for the USDA Food Box program. We have heard money has been allocated by the government, but do not yet know if the current program will simply be extended, a new program will begin in January or no program will be put in place. This is a nationwide question. It seems likely something will happen, although there will likely be a gap after December 31. We’ll be making some decisions in the next week and will communicate with you directly. Thank you for your concern and prayers.
Thank you for your continued dedication to these families, especially during these holiday weeks.
Merry Christmas!

Groceries for Families: Week 38 - Day 3
Thursday has had slightly lower attendance numbers the past two weeks, so we were watching today anxiously. Quite a few Thursday people came earlier in the week, so that also was a factor. Happily, attendance today was strong. The line was long at the beginning and nearly emptied by 1:45pm, but people kept coming the rest of the afternoon. The line stayed strong, yet not too long. We were able to give out a lot of food today, which always feels good. The morning of donations being dropped off was steady. There was even a person waiting as we unlocked the parking lot gate at 7:00am. The weather was very pleasant, with no rain or wind and a tolerable temperature. Great way to end the week!

Groceries today were brought by Sacred Heart School & Parish, Bellevue Presbyterian, Overlake Park Presbyterian, Highland Covenant, First United Methodist, Doxa, Crossroads Bible, and Lighthouse churches, as well as the Rotary Bellevue Sunrise Club, Champions Foundation, and the Jubilee Friends group. A total of 176 orders came in today and all went out to families, along with another 38 carried over from yesterday, for a total of 214. Thank you to everyone who donated today!
The AM volunteers came from Crossroads Bible Church this morning. This group managed a very busy morning of incoming groceries, pantry items, deliveries, and packing food boxes. They worked hard and had a lot of fun. Thank you, crew!
Gift bags were handed out by volunteers on the third and final “Ladies Day”. These lovely bags were created by the Women’s Ministry at Crossroads Bible Church to celebrate the women in this grocery program and help make them feel appreciated. Ruth and Debbie had fun handing them out, catching nearly everyone by surprise. Thank you, CBC!
A delivery of diapers came via volunteers from Eastside Baby Corner. This is their last delivery, as EBC needs to pull back a bit. This wonderful partner and longtime Eastside cornerstone have been supporting this program since the spring. Thank you for the many, many boxes of diapers and other items which have been provided through EBC for the families.
As is common on Thursdays when the week ends, our Seattle partner, El Dios Viviente Methodist Church, came at 4pm with two vehicles to take the remaining food boxes, fresh vegetables, and bakery goods. Pastor Gerardo is leading an effort to support 400 families in his neighborhood and community. We have been blessed to have a deep relationship with him since the spring. As an extra surprise for his own families, all the remaining gift bags were also given to him to pass to the ladies. He was very happy and said he had been looking for something special to provide to the women. Please pray for him and their operation in West Seattle. It has become a critical lifeline for so many people. Gerardo is on the right in the picture.
A picture is to the left shows the check-in station. Here, Denisse works to check people’s grocery ID cards and admit them to today’s operation. She is the point person for the whole operation and is on the front lines. There is a wind screen to keep the wind & rain out. There is a heater to keep her warm. Yet, it is a difficult and very important job she does. She does it very well.
A few stories to share:
Jubilee Elves, the Christmas program being offered to families this year, will be handing out all the gifts tomorrow and Saturday. The funding goals were met 100% and matched by an anonymous donor to support 500 families. Wow! Thank you to all who donated and participated this year.
Mercedes received her gift bags today. Especially in the Hispanic community, it is very common for one person to pick up groceries for one, two, three or, in Mercedes case today, four other families. They share the effort to make it easier for everyone. In her hand are five gift bags. In her tiny car were 5 full orders of groceries, which is a lot. We had to pack it very well to get it to fit. She was so happy and was delighted to share the gift bags with her friends soon after. Mercedes has been with us for many months, since the spring. The beginning relationship was actually a little rough but since then it has really become very strong. She is a delightful person and we love when she is here. Please pray for her family. She said life remains very hard for them.
The Bellevue Fire Department pulled into the parking lot early this morning with a pumper truck and ladder truck. Wow, what a sight! Surprisingly, the fire fighters piled out with 20 grocery orders in hand to donate today. This wasn’t expected, so was a lot of fun to receive. Thank you!
By the end of the week, this place looks a bit beaten up. So much food and other inventory move through the building and outside patio area. It is an awesome system that looks a bit like controlled chaos, but it is a well-oiled operation, for sure. Yet, it leaves a wake of debris behind it and by Thursday afternoon it is quite a mess. At 3:30pm today, volunteers showed up to tackle it all. By 5:00pm, it looks just beautiful. The back entrance where all the food production and market area reside is right now a clean, empty space with just lights and holiday decorations. It looks just great and is so satisfying to see it closed down tightly for the quiet weekend. It feels good right now.
Thank you for a wonderful week. There are 700+ families (3100+ people) out there in the community right now who have food, diapers, hygiene, and pantry items. Beyond that, they know someone cares about them and there is a community that sees them and is holding them up during this difficult time. May they also feel hope. May they also feel this community is home. May they feel they belong. May they feel safe. May they feel joy in this season. May they feel loved. Yes, may it be so.
Merry Christmas to you all, dear friends,

Groceries for Families: Week 38 - Day 2
The weather was nice today until it wasn’t. The morning had dry weather for the flurry of people bringing groceries and pantry items. There were lots and lots of happy people coming in. Right at 1pm, as we opened for families, the rain started. It stayed steady and often hard all afternoon and early evening. Families arrived early, with the line stretching across the lawn all afternoon. People seemed to be in a good mood, with lots of smiles. It was a great day.

Groceries today were delivered by Bellevue Breakfast Rotary, Rotary Club of Bellevue and the Jubilee Friends group, as well as Calvary Chapel Eastside, Newport Covenant, Victory Court, Indian Fellowship, St. Louise, Crossroads Bible, Bellevue Presbyterian, 24-Seven and Bellevue Christian Reformed churches. A total of 286 orders were delivered today, which was 52 more than expected. Wow! Thank you for the extra orders. Most of the expected orders went out today, and the rest will go out first tomorrow. Thank you to everyone who donated today.
Food boxes arrived early today at 7:45am. Eggs from Costco arrived soon after. Volunteers brought food from the QFC Crossroads at about 11:00am. The AM volunteer crew was from Bellevue Presbyterian today. They did a great job of receiving the strong in-flow of groceries and pantry items, as well as packing about half the food boxes. Thank you crew!
The handing out of Holiday Women’s Gift Bags continued today from Crossroads Bible Church. Two volunteers spent the afternoon with the crew, stationed in the library and handing them out to each woman. (Men took them to their wives at home.) Women were very surprised and felt very appreciated. A picture of Kim (volunteer in orange) and Kim (the family who has been coming since the spring) to the right. It was very sweet all afternoon. Thank you, Lori, Kim, and CBC.
Forty Christmas Activity Boxes were delivered by Crossroads Bible Church this morning. Wednesday is a very social group of families, which have created a strong community typically gathering around 11:30am. We chatted with two women who speak English and Spanish, asking them to help communicate to families who arrive early. They were wonderful and loved helping. Families were excited to be offered them, and they were gone by 12:30pm. Thank you, Kristen and CBC!
A few stories:
Rosette cookies were brought to the crew by Sylvia, one of the Wednesday families. She made them fresh and packaged them in a very special way for us. She said she wanted to say thank you to everyone who has helped her family. Please accept this thanks, as it is passed to you here.
Bertha is a Wednesday family who has essentially created a job for herself the last couple of months as Market Coordinator. She and her husband Vidal come around 1:15pm. She jumps right into the market, helping keep it stocked, organized, and clean. We actually gave her an official yellow vest to wear a few weeks ago. Vidal gets in line to get groceries and then waits in the car for the next 90 minutes, while Bertha works. She speaks a little English and is delightful to be with. Very fun.
Two Christmas cards were given to us by families yesterday. The inside of the cards is attached here. The Spanish loosely translates to “I thank God first and you for the blessing you leave and for taking me in your lives. May God bless you and your family much more. Thank you. Maria”
Thanks for another great day in ‘Groceries for Families’. The lives of these families remain very hard. We hope to see parents getting back to work one day soon, which will bring back stability. In the meantime, thank you for all you’re doing to support them.
Merry Christmas,

Groceries for Families: Week 38 - Day 1
Today marks week 16 of version 2 of the ‘Groceries for Families’ program. The weather was rainy in the morning, calm around noon, and then turned stormy in the afternoon. By the late afternoon, it was quite windy. Fortunately, none of this impacted the operation much. Typical winter day around here. The morning was buzzing early with lots of people bringing in groceries and pantry items. Families have lined up the length of the canopies all afternoon, with no break. It was super busy, with the operation not ending until 3:45pm, which is 15-30 minutes longer than desired. We had 15 people come from the waiting list today and 30-35 people from Wed & Thu come today. That is an extra 50 people today, which explains the long shift. The holidays are definitely causing a time crunch for families. In the end, it was another great day.

Groceries today came from the Jubilee Friends group (a record 28!), as well as Evangelical Chinese, Covenant Presbyterian, Awakening, Westminster Chapel, Crossroads Bible, Bellevue Presbyterian, Creekside Covenant, Cornerstone Fellowship, East Shore Unitarian and Bellevue Christian Reformed churches. A total of 200 new orders came in today and all went out to families, along with 39 additional orders held over from last week. Wow! Thank you to everyone who donated.
Lots of deliveries came in Sunday, Monday and today. Sunday, volunteers brought food from Safeway Thrasher’s Corner in Bothell.
Monday, volunteers brought food from Safeway Overlake and QFC Crossroads. Monday, produce was delivered by Cascadia Produce as part of a King County grant program. Today, volunteers brought food from QFC Crossroads. Today, Medosweet Farms delivered food boxes. Today, Costco delivered eggs. Lots going on here!
Each week, we are about 100 food boxes short, so have been getting extra boxes weekly from Farmer Frog in Woodinville to fill the gap. Today, Ed took the Jubilee truck to Farmer Frog and came back with 150 food boxes, one pallet extra. Wow! He also brought Brussel sprouts and a huge pallet full of carrots. Carrots are very popular with families. We put a handful in each food box and put boxes of them in the market today. Thank you, Ed and Farmer Frog! We used 43 of the extra boxes today.
The morning volunteer crew today came from Cornerstone Christian Fellowship. This crew of 8 did an awesome job of managing the flow of incoming groceries and packing food boxes. It was busy! Thank you, crew.
Yesterday, we did a weekly market for senior citizens in the community, offering lots of fresh produce and other items delivered from QFC. This is made possible through a King County grant which allows us to purchase fresh produce from King County farms, specifically for King County seniors. About 40 people came yesterday in person. We delivered another 10 today, along with the senior lunches which Barb and her crew made. This silent part of this program is truly special.
We ran out of refrigeration today at the end of the day. One older refrigerator is down right now, and the contents of the extra food boxes filled the other two up fast. Fortunately, Bellevue Christian Reformed Church offered to hold the remaining bins of food for a few days. Volunteers hauled about 8 bins to the church this evening. Thank you, BCRC and Max & Steve.
A few fun notes:
Lunch was brought for the crew today by two ladies. Maria, who often brings food on Tuesdays, brought tamales. Yum! Angelina brought burritos. See attached picture. It is very common for people to say thank you by bringing food. These thanks are also for you, so please feel their love back to you for all you do. (the burritos were very tasty!)
Crossroad Bible Church and their Women’s Ministry created lovely gift bags for all the women in the grocery program. Yesterday, about 700 gift bags were delivered to the Jubilee Library. Today, two volunteers handed out bags to each woman, wanting them to feel special, appreciated, and loved. It was wonderful to see the look of surprise on their faces. Inside were many small feminine items, some holiday cheer, and personal cards. They were wonderful. Thank you, CBC and the many donors who made these women feel special today. It will continue all week.
Some of you have been marveling at the number of churches and organizations bringing groceries daily. It is quite fun to look at the list on the whiteboard each morning. Here’s a quick snapshot for the week.
We start this week with 697 families in the ‘Groceries for Families’ program. We removed 3 families last week and had 49 families on the waiting list. We made the decision to invite the 49 families into the program this week as full participants. (Many of you have been asking about these families – thank you.) As you’ve read, the past two weeks have had days with higher numbers of no-show families. We have learned this is simply because schedules have become busy for families this month. We also believe some families will not be able to come because of the holidays. Yet, the food supply is not less. Therefore, we feel comfortable adding these families now and letting the numbers settle over the next three weeks. Of the 49, 15 came today, exchanging their orange ‘wait list’ card for a white ‘GFF’ card. We expect the rest will come tomorrow and Thursday. We will continue to run a waiting list for any new families which show up each day. It is better to bring them into the program in batches, than one by one. We will keep you posted.
Thank you for another great day. The support from you, the community, is sustaining and even growing. Together, we are helping those most vulnerable in this community. Thank you. Please keep going. Life is very hard for these families, and together we are helping them bridge this gap until some sense of normal returns. Thank you.
Merry Christmas to you all,
Ken Carpenter

Groceries for Families: Week 37 - Day 3
The last day of operation this week ends on a good note, with lots of happy people. The pace of families coming today was slower than normal, but by the end, all the food was passed out. It almost lulled us to sleep, yet the result was the same. Strange. The morning was a nice pace of people bringing groceries and pantry items. The weather was chilly most of the day with damp air which made it feel even colder. But the rain and wind held off. We’d take cold over rain or wind, any day.

Groceries today were delivered by Sacred Heart School & Parish, Doxa, First United Methodist, Overlake Park Presbyterian, Highland Covenant, Crossroads Bible, Bellevue Presbyterian, and Lighthouse churches, as well as the Champions Foundation and Jubilee Friends group. A total of 208 grocery orders came in today and all went out to families. Thank you to everyone who participated today.
The morning volunteer group was from Westminster Chapel. This crew of 10 had enough people to take on extra tasks within the operation, along with the receiving of groceries and packing of food boxes. It was a great group and lots of fun. Thank you, crew!
Food boxes arrived early this morning for the third time this week. With the colder temperatures, this is totally fine and makes the whole morning easier to plan. The Costco truck with eggs actually came even earlier. Volunteers brought food from the Crossroads QFC later in the morning. Love it when the plan comes together!
Spiritridge Elementary in Bellevue did day 2 of their food/pantry drive for the grocery program. PTSA members delivered two cars full at about 4:00pm, and the volunteers quickly loaded it all into the building. What a great gift from the community to this program. Thank you!
The weekly delivery from Eastside Baby Corner came today. This partner in Issaquah has provided a weekly supply of diapers and more since the spring. Thank you EBC and thank you Theresa for the delivery.
An update on one family we’ve been following:
Shahin came today instead of her normal Wednesday. This was because her husband had an MRI at Overlake Hospital for his ongoing battle with a brain tumor. She doesn’t fully know the results yet but understands the doctors are most concerned about swelling in one portion of his brain. It is the area that controls speech, which is why he cannot talk. They increased his medicine to try to reduce the swelling. Unfortunately, the side effect is it keeps him awake, so he didn’t sleep at all last night. She says he is normally a calm, easy-going person, but his current state is full of frustration and anger. She left him resting when she came to Jubilee. She said she is on a constant edge of tears, which she holds back when she is home. She is so tired. Please continue to pray for their family.
She also came to Jubilee on Monday seeking help to understand an auto shop statement. She had gone to a place to have the oil changed and tires rotated on her car. They did an inspection and gave her an estimate of $1600 to fix everything. They also said 2 tires needed to be replaced, so gave her an estimate for 4 new tires for another $700. She was very confused and very scared that her car is unsafe. We helped her understand the details of the quote and what was necessary now and what wasn’t. The only thing really needed was replacing the light bulbs over the back license plate. This story shows how such a simple thing for someone raised in this culture can create confusion and panic in someone like Shahin. She needs help navigating parts of life around here. The hope in building relationships of trust with families through the grocery program, we can also help them through the Community Care department in the future, such as things like this.
USDA Food Boxes:
As mentioned in this space earlier this week, the current USDA program supplying the food boxes will end on December 31. Here is the website, so you can follow any updates yourself: https://www.ams.usda.gov/selling-food-to-usda/farmers-to-families-food-box. We are currently in ‘Round 4’. You can also see how the funding has diminished since the summer peak. We didn’t actually start utilizing the boxes until September 22. You can watch the news about the relief package being discussed in Congress right now. This is how funding will be provided for any potential ‘Round 5’. There will definitely be a break between rounds, no matter what. Please pray for guidance on how this program should continue, along with us. Please share any ideas. Thank you.
Thanks for another great day and another great week in the ‘Groceries for Families’ program. We are blessed to be in such a deep partnership with you all to keep this program running. Thank you!
Have a great evening, wherever this email finds you.

Groceries for Families began in March 2020 to serve families financially affected by the pandemic. Over 25 organizations and churches have partnered with Jubilee REACH to provide families with groceries, hygiene items, and supplies.
