Groceries for Families: Week 51 - Day 2

Don’t let the spring temperature of the afternoon fool you about the morning…it was very cold until about 11am. This was fine for keeping food cold, but hands were taking a beating today. Finally, the warmth took over, and the afternoon had jackets off. Some people were in short sleeves. Nice to see. Today was a busy day but much more in control than last Wednesday…whew! The morning was a constant flow of happy people dropping off groceries, pantry, and hygiene items. Thank you, everyone! Busy day! Families lined up early and kept a steady pace all afternoon. The last 45 minutes were the busiest of all. A lot of food and pantry items went out today. Great day!

Groceries today were provided by 24-Seven, Indian Fellowship, Calvary Chapel Eastside, St. Louise, Newport Covenant, Bellevue Christian Reformed, Crossroads Bible and Bellevue Presbyterian churches, as well as the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Bellevue and the Jubilee Friends group.  A total of 249 orders came in today and all went out to families.  Thank you to everyone who donated today!

The AM volunteers were from Crossroads Bible Church.  This group of ladies worked hard on the busiest morning of the week!  Wow!  They processed all the incoming groceries, which filled the lobby by the end.  They packed 120 food boxes with fresh produce, which is physical work.  Well done and thank you, crew!

Two deliveries from Amazon Go and a local Distributor filled the market very well today.  It offered families a nice variety of extra items.  Thank you, Rick, Gil, and Mike!

Food Boxes Insulated

Food Boxes Insulated

All five pallets were quickly covered in ice gel packs and wrapped in moving blankets shortly after delivery at 9am.  (see picture to the right)  Each pallet was unwrapped only as we needed to access it.  The last pallet at 3:00pm was still very cold.  Success!  We flipped the whole food prep area, so as to keep the blankets dry if it rains and for ease of flow.  It worked very well, for day one.  We will adjust going forward.

We received word from Cascadia Produce that the USDA boxes have been extended to April 30.  This is the first time the government has been ahead of the curve.  Very good news for Jubilee and other programs around the country.  This has to be the best use of taxpayer money ever.  Food directly to people who need it.  You can follow along here: https://www.ams.usda.gov/selling-food-to-usda/farmers-to-families-food-box.

Classroom Cards

Classroom Cards

A teacher from Bellevue Christian School brought a large stack of handmade cards from students, written to families, offering encouragement and love.

We put each one in a grocery bag today. Imagine the smiles when people found them this afternoon. Thank you, class!!!

A few stories and updates:

  • As shared yesterday, Rose got her 3rd day of work at Home Depot this week (Tue, Wed, Thu), so came early this morning to get groceries today. Rose is a very sweet person and one we all enjoy. She is originally from Tanzania and has four young children at home. Her husband suddenly died almost 1 year ago, in mid-March, from a heart condition, so she is dealing with so much more than just the pandemic. He is actually buried across the street from Jubilee at Sunset Hills Memorial Park. Whenever she receives flowers here, she takes them to his grave. Beautiful. Please continue to pray for her.

  • Ken’s mom was here volunteering today, visiting from Spokane. She drove all morning and arrived just in time for her shift. They are a good example of how people can support ‘Groceries for Families’ from a long distance, having donated since the beginning. We put her to work packing food boxes. She did great!

  • Maria brought the crew lunch today, which will actually be served tomorrow. It is a chicken stew, made from things she received at Jubilee. Normally, she comes on Tuesday but couldn’t make it yesterday. She continues to love the crew through her cooking.

Thanks for another great day in ‘Groceries for Families’.  We look forward to the day when families can again fully support themselves.  Until then, this program will continue to step into the gap.  Thank you for all you are doing.  Hopefully, you are finding joy and meaning through serving.

Have a great evening, wherever this email finds you.

Groceries for Families: Week 51 - Day 1

With 52 weeks in a year, this is the beginning of week 51 for ‘Groceries for Families’. It’s so hard to believe. Wow! Soon, you’ll be hearing of a way we’re looking to commemorate the one-year mark with you all. Today was a lovely spring-like day, although the temperature in the shadow of the building kept the temperature in the operation area cool. Still, it was great to see the sun. The morning was bustling with cars in and out of the parking lot, bringing groceries, pantry, and hygiene items. Thank you, everyone! The afternoon with families was slower than past Tuesdays but steady. It certainly seems like some Tuesday families now come on other days, as it used to be the busiest day of the week. Life is complicated, so people have to adjust. We will adjust with them.

As with each week, an army of volunteers brings extra food early in the week which supply the bulk of the inventory for the market each day.  We want to acknowledge their effort here.  Volunteers brought food from the Safeway Thrashers Corner.  Volunteers brought food from QFC Crossroads.  Volunteers brought food from Amazon Go Overlake.  Volunteers brought food from Whole Foods Bellevue.  Volunteers brought food from Trader Joe’s Overlake.  Volunteers brought food from a local distributor.  Thank you, everyone!

The AM volunteers were from Westminster Chapel today, with many first-time volunteers.  They worked very hard on a busy morning to receive all the incoming donations and pack 120 food boxes.  Thank you, crew!

Senior Lunches

Senior Lunches

We received a donation of feminine hygiene personal packs from Seattle T2P2 this weekend.  These zip-lock type bags were full of products for an individual woman.  All were offered to women today and were very popular.  Thank you, Amanda and Seattle T2P2!

Senior lunches went out today to 32 people in the community: meatloaf (Barb’s personal recipe), mashed potatoes, corn, and lots of goodies. Gina, Theresa, and Barb delivered them all in three different routes around the city. Thank you, ladies!

Wrapped Food Boxes

Wrapped Food Boxes

Starting today, all the food boxes on pallets will be wrapped with moving blankets as soon as they are delivered, as insulation to keep the cold items cold. Additionally, the donated ice gel packs are placed all over the top and in all the spaces. Today, the food boxes arrived late, so three pallets were wrapped. When the last pallet was unwrapped 4 hours later, everything was wonderfully cold. Now, we hope that stays true as temperatures rise this spring. Thank you, Jeff and Gayle!

A few updates:

  • We continue to walk alongside Shahin, now three weeks after her husband died of brain cancer. She has good and bad days. She knows she needs to grieve. She’s working to contact Social Security, but the availability of appointments is very small. She brought her wedding book last week and laughed as she shared. Please pray for her and their daughter.

  • David had his third interview with Microsoft yesterday. If he continues, next comes the technical interview. He is hopeful to have that next opportunity. Please pray for their family through this process.

  • Rose is now a month into her new job at Home Depot and just this week picked up a 3rd shift. She will actually come for groceries early tomorrow because she is working the next three afternoons, so can’t come during the normal time. As people get back to full-time employment, we expect them to be able to support themselves more.

Today’s PM Crew

Today’s PM Crew

We begin this week with 733 families in ‘Groceries for Families’, with another 35 on the waiting list.  We’re seeing more and more people switching days to come to get groceries, as life gets busy for them.  We are certainly understanding, knowing it is difficult to open up the same afternoon each week.  There are some families dealing with other things which keep them from coming at all.  We’re trying to help and encourage them.  Please pray for all these families.  Life remains hard.  Hopefully, the sunshine on days like today helps.

Thank you for the continued support and dedication to this program and these families.  It matters, and it is working.

Enjoy the late sunset tonight,

Groceries for Families: Week 50 - Day 3

Week 50 ends on a very positive note. The early morning cold fog gave way to a lovely sunny day. Because the operation is set up on the north side of the building, which is in constant shade, and under canopies, the temperature stayed rather chilly most of the day. By the late afternoon, the warmth even found its way to the main area. Nice. Lots of people without jackets today. The morning shoppers streamed in with all sorts of groceries, pantry, and hygiene items. Thank you, everyone! It’s so great to see your happy faces. The families lined up early and kept a steady pace all afternoon. It felt a little slow but ended up being a normal Thursday.

Today

Today’s AM Crew

The daily delivery of eggs from Costco came early in the fog this morning.  Food box delivery came later around 10:00am.  Fresh produced was purchased at Chef’s Store (formerly Cash & Carry) at 7am this morning.  It all comes together in the end!

The AM volunteers were from Sacred Heart Parish today.  This group of veteran volunteers has the system down and works quickly through the tasks.  Incoming groceries were processed and 120 food boxes were packed.  They did a great job.  Thank you, crew!

Packing Food Boxes

Packing Food Boxes

We tested a 2nd insulation method for the food boxes today: moving blankets. You can see it in the photo to the left. Four blue blankets were wrapped tightly around a pallet of 48 boxes. We also used the bubble wrap next to it. At 3:15pm, all the boxes under both covers were very cold and the chicken still rocks solid. Success! We will be using the moving blankets starting next Tuesday for all five pallets. These are less fragile and easier to use than bubble wrap. Thank you, Jeff, for the engineering and testing.

Liz!

Liz!

Liz was today’s pinch-hitter for Denisse in the point position this afternoon.  She wisely moved her table to a sunny spot and kept the operation moving along smoothly all afternoon.  Thank you, Liz!  Thank you, Daniel, Ashley, and Liz for covering for Denisse this week.  She’ll be back Tuesday.

St. Monica Parish and El Dios Viviente Methodist Church both came late this afternoon to pick up the remaining food boxes and other items.  They will be distributing it to other families in need.  We’re blessed to be in partnership with both of these groups.

Fresh rosemary was brought, which came from the grounds of a local Bellevue School.  It added a nice choice to the market.  Thank you, Jean and Shawn.

A few updates:

  • You’ve been reading about Marcia (MAR-see-uh) a few times in the past weeks. She emailed this week that she had to go in for an emergency, yet minor, surgery at Overlake. We didn’t see her or her husband this week. No other details are known. Please keep her in your prayers.

  • Shahin is struggling emotionally, now almost two weeks after her husband died. The burial was last Friday. She has received the cards some of you have sent. Thank you. A few people have brought her meals. So, there are people caring for her. One of the people walking alongside her reassured her many people care about her family and are praying. She replied with this text: “Thanks so much for the prayers. I’m sure they do because I feel that in my heart.” Please continue to pray for them.

  • Erwin was here late this afternoon. He’s picking up some hours at a downtown restaurant, so comes late. The last update from his wife’s illness a few weeks ago was good news – no cancer or tuberculosis. She’s continuing to cough, although it seems to be getting less. They are working with doctors to figure out what is wrong. With cancer ruled out, the anxiety is less, but they need to get her well. Their next appointment is March 30 at Harborview. Please pray for them.

‘Groceries for Families’ continues to roll along at full steam. It’s hard to know what the future will hold. We’re watching many indicators to get a sense as to when families in the program will start to depart because they can support themselves. Guidelines from the CDC, State, County, and City are certainly key. Vaccines are important. Getting people back to work is likely the biggest catalyst, especially the restaurant and hotel industries, as well as business transportation, such as Microsoft. We’re watching things carefully.

Groceries for Families: Week 50 - Day 2

Today was very close to a spring-like day. The chill in the air never quite let go, although plenty of people were in short sleeves. But the sun was out and the fog burned away early. It brightened the whole day; likely for you too, if you are in this area. The morning benefited from the warming sun with many people dropping off groceries, pantry, and hygiene items. Thank you to everyone! Today’s afternoon operation was very busy from start to finish…including overtime. While yesterday seemed slow, today had a line that never ended. The last family left at 3:45pm, which is only the 2nd time we’ve gone well past the 3:30pm closing time. The difference today was many families came as singles, rather than picking up for multiple families. This made for more people here, more food exchanges, and a much busier parking lot. A lot of food went home with people today. Great day!

Trenton & Ashley

Trenton & Ashley

Ashley covered for Denisse today, who is out on vacation.  This position runs the “Point” for the operation, checking families in and getting them into the food operation.  For having rarely done this important job, she was thrown into one of the busiest days ever.  She did it with a smile and a steady calmness.  Well done and thank you, Ashley!

In this email, we’ve reported that both the Grocery Outlet Bridle Trails and Crossroads will give one order of GFF groceries free for every 5 purchased.  As an update, both stores now will keep track of purchases, so all five do not need to be bought at the same time.  They’ll keep track.  When 5 are purchased, then the 6th is free.  You can call the store in advance and tell them when you want to come to pick up the order.  They will pack the order and have it ready to go.  In and out quickly.  Shoppers are reporting very good service from both stores.  Take advantage of it, if you like.

The insulation cube described here yesterday was tested for the first time today.  We opened the first box from this pallet at 3:15pm, and everything was very cold, including the chicken still frozen.  Wow!  We’re going to try another prototype tomorrow.  Hopefully, soon we’ll have a new process for keeping food boxes cold as the outside temperatures warm up.  Please donate gel ice packs, if you have any.  Thank you, Jeff, for your designs.

A few stories:

Hanging the Card

Hanging the Card

  • As we were doing the opening orientation for the PM crew at 12:50pm, walking down the main operational pathway came to young 5-year-old Alexa carrying a very large poster for such a little child. We’ve gotten to know Alexa and her mom, Georgina, over the many months of GFF. Alexa is tiny and seems shy, yet is quite spunky. She’s brought thank you cards in the past, which hang in the lobby. Today she brought a very large thank you poster, which she worked many hours on creating, according to mom. As she came into the lobby, she was treated like a queen by the entire crew. She was beaming. We found a prominent spot on the wall for the poster, and she stood on the table with Sterling to hang it with tape. She is the perfect image of cute and sweet. Look at the poster carefully. It is written to all of you.

  • A woman named Carmen often comes late for groceries on Wednesdays. She has 3 people in her family and is a little shy while here. Today, she seemed more curious about the full operation so was asking questions about where everything comes from, the food, and other items. Because it was 4pm, we were able to give a longer answer, explaining in detail where each part comes from a food box, grocery bag, pantry items, etc. She was stunned. She had no idea. She said the high quality and variety of the food & items she receives each week always surprised her. Now she knows it is brought by people in the community who care about her. Truly, she struggled to comprehend what she had just learned. It was great. We don’t know much about her. Please pray for her. Life clearly isn’t easy for their family.

  • Michelle used to be in this program in the spring and early summer, including us delivering to her through the summer. But she hasn’t been with us as she no longer needing the help. She is a single mom, with 7 kids. She sent an email today, asking about donating children’s clothes, as a way to repay the help she received. Here’s a section of the email, where she shared a bit more.

“God has been helping me out through this whole shut down. I was able to move to a place suitable for a large family without everyone being on top of one another and I have a job at Seattle Children’s Hospital now.  I would prefer to work days (but can’t at the moment kids being home not at school) but I can complain even though it's a challenge working nights with kids home all day.  God never gives you anything you cant handle.  I prayed so hard for a suitable home and a job and all these things recently have worked themselves out and I'm so grateful for the help jubilee has given to my family “

Thanks for a great day.  The food, pantry, and hygiene items you provided, which went out today, are now in the homes of the GFF families.  That is a good feeling.  May it warm your heart, also.

Groceries for Families: Week 50 - Day 1

Here we are at week 50 of ‘Groceries for Families’ and can see the one-year mark just over the horizon. It’s hard to believe. This week begins on a positive note, although the family count was lower today for some reason. The weather cooperated, with cool temperatures, no wind, and no rain until late this afternoon. The morning was bustling with lots of people bringing groceries, pantry, and hygiene items. Thank you, everyone! Families lined up early, but the line dwindled quickly. Most of the day had a short line, at most. In the end, we seemed to be about 30-40 families short of normal. That’s odd for a Tuesday. We’re sending a communication, that anyone who missed today should come on Wednesday or Thursday. For sure, it is increasingly harder for people to come on their assigned day during the short afternoon window. We’re working to be more accommodating.

Today’s AM Crew

Today’s AM Crew

At the beginning of each week, there are a number of deliveries made by volunteers from local stores.  Most of this food ends up in the market each day and adds a wonderful variety for families to choose.  Volunteers brought food from Safeway Thrasher’s Corner.  Volunteers brought food from QFC Crossroads (twice).  Volunteers from food from Whole Foods Bellevue.  Volunteers brought food from Trader Joe’s Overlake.  Volunteers brought food from a local distributor (3 times) – see attached picture.  Thank you everyone for your time, effort, and continued dedication.

Carrots!

Carrots!

Each morning (Tue, Wed & Thu) we purchase fresh produce at Chef’s Store (formerly Cash & Carry).  These items are added to each food box: green pepper, cucumber, bananas, tomatoes, carrots & garlic.  For those of you donating cash to ‘Groceries for Families’, this is where much of it ends up.  (See attached picture of Sarah today with a monster carrot)  Additionally, eggs are purchased from Costco, so each family gets one dozen.  Thank you for supporting this part of the program which provides fresh produce

Daniel

Daniel

Denisse is a Jubilee REACH employee who manages the family roster and communication for ‘Groceries for Families’. In the operation, she stands out front and checks everyone in. She is on vacation this week, so there is a substitute ready for each day to cover her very important job. Today, Daniel had the pole position. (see picture to the left).

Jubilee REACH Site Coach Jen serves in the GFF program each Tuesday and usually works the position of filling the unique pantry bags for families.  Her normal job for Jubilee REACH is as Managing Site Coach at Tyee Middle School.  Some of you may have had children in some of her clubs and sports teams.  She is a world-class baker, too!

Insulating Food Boxes

Insulating Food Boxes

With the spring temperatures rising, we are looking ahead to the time when food boxes won’t stay cold enough sitting outside through the morning and afternoon.

Today, we made a prototype of an insulating cube made from large bubble wrap, which is wonderful insulation. A zipper was installed on the side for easy installation and removal. If it works as expected, we’ll make a total of five to cover all five pallets of food boxes each day, uncovering them only when needing to pack them with produce & get them out to families. As written above, we’d like to place frozen gel packs all around the boxes under the bubble wrap to add to the cold. If you have any to donate, please bring them to Jubilee REACH.

A few stories and updates:

  • Shahin, who lost her husband to brain cancer ten days ago, brought a Persian rice pudding for the staff today. It is a tradition in Iran to make such desserts when someone dies and then invite friends to the home. She reversed that today by bringing the specialty dessert to Jubilee. It is flavored with saffron, cinnamon, sugar, and rose water, as well as pieces of pistachio and almonds. Libbey, who is a regular volunteer at Jubilee and has been walking alongside Shahin for many months during this difficult time. Very special.

  • On Wednesday last week, you read in this space about David, who is interviewing at Microsoft. He passed the second interview and is moving on in the process. Next Monday, he has a third interview and will have a technical assessment. He feels confident he knows about 70% of what they are needing in a technician. He asked for prayers that it goes well. Getting hired would immediately change their lives.

  • At the end of the operation today, one family was here as part of the normal program getting their food. Another family was also here, as part of the waiting list. The waiting list family was sharing how they had been living in a hotel for a month and now have an apartment near Sammamish High School, about a mile north of Jubilee. They asked if they could push their groceries in a QFC cart to their home and bring it back. The other family in the program overheard this and offered to give them a ride home. It was a wonderful sight to see these two families immediately bond, with one supporting the other. Love that!

We begin this week with 737 families in the ‘Groceries for Families’ program (240 Tue, 237 Wed, 260 Thu).  There are 22 more families in the waiting list, who can still come weekly for food.  Interestingly, 10 families which had previously been removed from the program due to poor attendance returned last week and are now on the waiting list.  That is a lot for one week.  There are 68 families currently on the unofficial “watch list”, meaning their attendance has not been consistent.  We’re communicating with them to find out how we can help.

Here’s the breakdown for the number of people in each of the 237 families:

  • 1= 12

  • 2= 50

  • 3= 116

  • 4= 192

  • 5= 192

  • 6= 114

  • 7= 26

  • 8= 23

  • 9= 5

  • 10= 5

  • 11= 1

  • 12= 0

  • 13= 1

Groceries for Families: Week 49 - Day 3

We end this week on a positive note. The operation is running very smoothly. The family count seemed to be down a little bit this week but nothing is trending. The weather today started off chilly, become comfortable, and turned to rain in the afternoon. It didn’t impact the operation at all. The morning was super busy with lots of people coming in to drop off groceries, pantry, and hygiene items. Thank you, everyone! Families kept a steady pace all afternoon, with many people picking up for others, which has become common.

Pastor Gerardo from El Dios Viviente Methodist Church in White Center, Seattle came this afternoon to pick up extra food in our inventory.  We’ve been in partnership with them since the spring to help support about 400 families in their community.  We’ve been blessed to be connected to the great work his team is doing there.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve also partnered with St. Monica Catholic Church on Mercer Island to provide them with extra food, which they distribute to various shelters in the area.  They came again today and are doing wonderful work in the community.  Thank you!

A few stories and updates:

  • Alfredo is a 6th grader from Odle Middle School who comes each Tuesday to pick up food for his family. He’s been coming since the spring and blends in with the many adults surrounding him. He is quiet but knows the system, making his way through the line & back to the car where his dad or aunt await him. We don’t really know why he comes alone and no one else from his family. Perhaps it is his English skills or their apprehension for some reason. Either way, he is providing his family an incredible service for a 12-year-old. We notice him each week and all admire him. Please pray for him.

  • Sylvia is a woman who has been coming since the spring. She showed up early Wednesday to ask for extra help. She has recently left her husband of 20 years because of domestic violence. (This has become an increasing problem during Covid-19 nationwide.) She took their 3 children to temporarily live with her parents in Kirkland, which is a tight fit. She was seeking legal and housing assistance. The Jubilee Community Care folks were able to provide her direction to resources. They also showed her compassion and let her know someone cares. Please pray for them. It’s a wonderful thing that trust is already built through the GFF program that she feels comfortable coming here for help. Life is messy, even without the virus.
